How a Tooth Extraction Might Help With Your Oral Health

Tooth Extraction Miami Beach, FL

Tooth extraction is sometimes needed to improve your overall oral health. Your general dentist will discuss the need for this procedure if they feel it is necessary to prevent new decay around the already decaying tooth.

You want to maintain the best oral hygiene habits to ensure you keep your original teeth for the longest time possible. Every patient wants to avoid going to the dentist to have a tooth removed or even worse.

An extraction can be prevented if you take rigorous care of your teeth when your dentist notices a problem developing. Talk to your dentist if you feel you need help in maintaining proper care. Your dental hygienists are also willing to help teach you good oral care.

Two different types of extractions

There are two types of extraction procedures performed on patients needing them.

A simple extraction will be done on any tooth that has grown over the gums. This type of tooth is easy to loosen and remove. Your dentist will use a tool called an elevator to lift the tooth. Then the crown and root of the tooth are removed from the jawbone and gum tissue.

This type of tooth extraction is needed when your tooth is severely infected and decayed, making it unable to be saved. This is also a procedure used when there is overcrowding in the mouth.

A surgical extraction is needed when the tooth has not grown out of the gums. It is only visible by x-rays. This type of extraction will require an incision into the gums to access the tooth and is more invasive than a simple extraction.

This method is generally used when removing wisdom teeth or teeth that have not ever broken through the gum line.

Why is oral health important?

Your oral health is very important in maintaining overall body health. Poor oral hygiene has been linked to infections caused by long-term untreated tooth decay. Some health issues caused by poor oral hygiene are:

  • Cavities
  • Gingivitis
  • Periodontal disease
  • Cracked-Tooth syndrome
  • Oral Cancer

Establishing a proper oral hygiene habit is essential to prevent needing a tooth extraction caused by decay. Always remember to brush your teeth twice a day, floss, and use mouthwash. If you do need an extraction, it is necessary to prevent further decay.

Tooth loss can make it harder for you to chew and enjoy your favorite foods. You will lose confidence because you will feel unsure about your smile, and tooth loss will cause your appearance to make you look much older than your actual age.

Always listen to your dentist's advice about what you need to do for your oral hygiene. Your dentist knows you best and will provide you with all options to fit your needs. If your dentist recommends an extraction, it must be necessary. However, you are always able to get a second opinion if you choose to.
